Los Angeles Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs (-5.5)

Fantasy Life’s game hub is a great tool for getting a good sense of what to watch for in each matchup of the weekend. For this one, we see some extremely favorable matchups for the Kansas City passing game, as well as some overall scoring trends.

Rich Hribar (@LordReebs) and I broke down this game from a fantasy standpoint on YouTube. Reebs likes the Chargers to cover the spread, but what about stacking this game on DraftKings?

It’s tough to do with all the superstar offensive players on the field, but that’s why we wanted to discuss all the relevant players to consider when building those lineups. Let’s get into it.

QB: Patrick Mahomes (KC)

Since Brandon Staley became the head coach of the Chargers, Patrick Mahomes has feasted on his defense. He’s thrown multiple TDs in all 6 matchups, and 3 or more in 5 of them. This one shouldn’t be much different.

LA’s defense has allowed huge games to Kirk Cousins, Tua Tagovailoa, and Dak Prescott. It’s landed them at 31st in yards per attempt allowed, and it makes me think that Mahomes could flirt with 30 or so fantasy points, which really hasn’t happened yet this year.

TE: Travis Kelce (KC)

If you’re paying for Mahomes, it’s very very difficult to pay for Kelce too, so we’re kind of in a bind with that. But since Kelce returned in Week 2, he’s:

  • 1st in target share

  • 1st in target rate per route run

  • Averages 3.3 MORE PPR points than TE2

It’s also fun to watch his rivalry with Derwin James, who has actually been able to slow him down at times. Seeing them try to get each other is a blast.

But if we can’t fit Kelce into a lineup, then what other Chiefs can we look at who have a chance to produce for us in this game?

WR: Rashee Rice (KC)

When Justin Watson got injured last week, Rice got a little bit of a bump. He’s an interesting figure in that he’s still not playing a ton of the snaps (60% last week), but when you look at the season, he’s got 4 of the 6 leading WR fantasy scores for the Chiefs. There’s something building here.

The Chargers defense vs WRs:

  • 31st in yards per target allowed

  • 31st in yards per catch allowed

  • 29th in TD rate allowed

So if you want to dabble with Rashee, you certainly can do it.

RB: Isiah Pacheco (KC)

Pacheco might be the chalkiest player in this game.

While he didn’t really go off last Thursday night, he did catch 6 passes for 38 yards, which he didn’t really do last year as a rookie. Where he was a touchdown or bust kind of guy before, he’s already returning more value in the passing game than he did ALL year in 2022.

Over the last 3 weeks, he’s also got well over 70% of the backfield touches in every game. The kid’s on the rise.

WR: Keenan Allen (LAC)

Looking at the other side of this matchup, Allen has been an absolute monster this season. We REALLY undervalued this guy back in the summer.

He’s the PPR WR4 on the season, with 2 games in the 30s. It could have been another one last week if Justin Herbert didn’t miss him on a long would-be touchdown.

He’s expensive on DraftKings at $8,600, but always in play if you can fit him into your lineup.

WR: Josh Palmer (LAC)

We expected to see Quentin Johnston take the next step and start to contribute, but that hasn’t happened yet. He only ran routes on 47% of the drop backs, while Palmer was in there for 100%.

He’s going to be a big part of this offense going forward, with a strong ADOT of 12 and a solid 26.2% of the air yards.

RB: Austin Ekeler (LAC)

Good to see Ekeler come back with no restrictions. Last week he had 85% of the backfield touches (18), so he’s back full time.

For his career vs. Kansas City:

  • 5 total TDs

  • 19.5 PPR points per game

  • 103 yards from scrimmage per game

  • 4 straight RB1 scoring games currently

It’s a good spot for him once again.

In the words of Broadway Joe Namath, “when you win, nothing hurts.” Here’s to winning big this Sunday!

The Touchdown Press is a must-read for every NFL fan — pure signal, highly actionable, and one-liners funny enough to make you pee a little bit.
