7 simple reasons 99% of you can be more profitable in SHORT slates on DraftKings:

For some reason, most of the field still plays these similarly to main slates.

This is the year you will take advantage.

Deal?

Okay, so what are the primary reasons you should prioritize short/small slates...

1. Fewer people care.

Here's why:

• Prize pools are smaller

• Less cash game action

• Laziness. Get me to the couch/bar

• Less (good) content & picks

The first three points are pretty self-explanatory.

So here's a quick rant teasing a larger rant (thread) for a later date...

Ready?

I shit on DFS content a lot.

...mostly because I personally believe 99% of it is either not good, or published way too early to be good.

This is an edge if you put in the work.

Why else should you play short slates?

2. They act as a natural hedge.

There's something magical about getting access (in a smart way) to other players...

Situations you can't quite justify it on your main slate teams.

Or maybe you are fading Cooper Kupp on Main, and you prefer to also live on a slate where he doesn't exist.

Been there.

3. Easy to identify top leverage spot.

Let's be honest.

DFS players are way too confident about probabilities of the "most likely" scenario.

This is why the chalk condenses heavily around very few paths.

Especially in smaller field GPPs.

It's not uncommon to see players reach 70+ % ownership in smaller field GPPs.

The environment is similar to SE/3max...

On steroids.

But at least the strategy is similar:

After you identify the main leverage point:

- Understand the common lineup construction using this player, they may be the first player in for most.

- Run optimals on your lineup builder of choice if you have to.

- Find a different type of roster construction that makes sense.

4. Easy to take a stand on a single outcome, game, or team.

Stacks, even onslaughts, encouraged.

We'll get there.

The odds of one team going nuclear, with a pie in which everyone eats, and fewer decisions have to be made...

...is actually pretty high with only a few games.

In Main slate GPPs, it's probably more acceptable, or defensible, to single-stack.

Short slates you must load up.

Overstack.

Onslaught.

Not only because it's probably optimal, but also because not enough people are doing it to the extreme.

5. Easy to stack in a unique way.

We talked about size already, but one strategy is significantly underutilized.

Attacking perceived negative correlations. (add RBs to your stack)

Not always a bell cow, instead, consider a more fragile workload where something breaks right.

Why?

You need that OUTLIER performance.

A guy that exceeds his traditional expectation. Ideally...

In the one game that goes nuts.

More importantly, these types of negative correlations usually differentiate your game stack.

Even if it's the most popular team.

Make sense?

Sacrificing median projection for more uniqueness and leverage is insanely important in today's meta.

Identifying a "team" far exceeds any negative correlation that you take on.

If nothing else, stack "differently"

This applies to short slates, as well.

Another way to gain leverage is to identify a chalky secondary piece in your stack.

Play the direct pivot.

Maybe it's Russell Gage instead of Julio Jones... at a 25% ownership discount.

Bonus points if injury concerns are the only thing depressing your pivot's ownership.

6. You can justify leaving more salary on the table.

Listen.

A lot of times, the pricing is extremely soft anyways.

It can help draw in the casual player who slept through lock.

But like showdown,

It's more important to be unique than to jam in a > combination that "fits".

NOTE:

Doesn't matter how leveraged a lineup is if there's not enough upside to win.

There's some feel here in GPPs, and it depends on your contest field size.

But leaving salary on the table to get off standard optimal constructions is generally +EV.

7. "Special" short slates draw more casual attention

- Preseason

- Thanksgiving

- Playoffs

These are the best slates of the entire year. More on this another time.

Tl;dr

1. Fewer people care

2. Natural hedge

3. Easy to identify top leverage spot

4. Easy to take a stand on a single event

5. Easy to stack in unique way

6. Justify leaving more salary on table

7. "special" short slates draw casuals

Many attack short slates like Main.
